William Egley (1798-1870) 

William Egley, born at Doncaster in 1798 was an English miniature painter.

Without any professional teaching he succeeded in finishing his first two portraits of Colonel Ogleby and of Richard Yates, the actor, which were received and exhibited by the Royal Academy in 1824. From that time until the year before his death he was a constant exhibitor, sending 160 miniatures to the Academy exhibitions, two pictures to the British Institution, and six to the Suffolk Street Gallery. He died in London on 19 March 1870, aged 72.

"Posthumous miniature after the late Mrs. Deeds". Oil on ivory with varnish coating, mounted to paperboard, with a small gilt spandrel and framed under glass, overall 9 ¾" x 7 ¾". Inscription in ink on the back of the board "Posthumous Miniature after late Mrs. Deeds, painted by William Egley, 75 Connaught Terrace, Hyde Park, London. July 19, 1868".
